Surface Management Agency (SMA) lines represent the surveyed boundary lines for which the Forest Service is responsible for marking and posting. These include the boundaries between NFS lands and non-NFS lands and the boundaries of congressionally designated areas such as National Wilderness.
The purpose of this feature class is to allow national forest system boundary managers to query and report on the status of these boundaries for planning boundary management and maintenance work, and to provide this information to anyone else needing this information for analysis, querying, reporting, mapping. The lines should indicate the current status of the physical marked and posted lines in the field, and their maintenance status. The purpose of the data is to provide display, identification, and analysis tools for determining current boundary information for Forest Service managers, GIS Specialists, and others.

Quality control measures taken: this feature class is populated by an automated translation process from the source feature class that is edited and maintained by the data stewards. Only stewards with the proper role grants can edit the data. The application used for editing has built in controls to only allow valid geometry and domains to control attribute integrity.
This theme is current to date of publication.
Generally the source information used to record spatial locations are from: 1) on-screen digitizing with a georeferenced topographic or image background; or 2) GPS field collected positions.

This data was published using Feature Manipulation Engine Software. The spatial features were extracted from the transactional database, manipulated to meet the desired output format and published to the target feature class. This data was migrated from the CDW. The spatial features were projected and imported into the target feature class.

The feature class structure has changed in IWEBDB (NRM Production) ALP_Rnn.RECORDBOUNDARY feature class. Columns have been added and deleted. This request is to update the published SMABoundary feature class to align to those changes. We have already prepared a feature class to use for the update in EDW: S_STAGE_LAND.EDW_SMABOUNDARY_STAGING. The weekly refresh/publication process already points to the S_STAGE_LAND.EDW_SMABOUNDARY_STAGING to update the records weekly. Now the S_USA.SMABoundary feature class structure needs to be updated to match it. The metadata and FS GIS Data Dictionary needs to be updated. Information for metadata and dictionary changes can be obtained from the Production feature class IWEBDB ALP_Rnn.RECORDBOUNDARY metadata: https://usfs.box.com/v/LSRSDDProdRecordBoundary. These changes will also affect layerfiles that EDW staff maintain: BoundarySurvey_SMA_SurfaceManagementArea_Boundary_EDW.lyr
