<descript>
The FIRESTAT (Fire Statistics System) Fire Occurrence point layer represents ignition points, or points of origin, from which individual wildland fires started on National Forest System lands. The source is the FIRESTAT database, which contains records of fire occurrence, related fire behavior conditions, and the suppression actions taken by management taken from the Individual Wildland Fire Report. This publicly available dataset is updated annually for all years previous to January 1 on or after February 16th.
<purpose>The FIRESTAT database contains current year and historical (dating back to 1987) Forest Service fire occurrence data and is used in analysis and reporting. The FIRESTAT point feature class is useful in making land and resource management decisions, in fire planning, and in quality control of the tabular database. It can be used to produce spatially enabled business intelligence reports.</purpose>

<attrlabl>FIRE_NUMBER</attrlabl>
<attrdef>Fire Number. Part of the unique key in FIRESTAT. Description and action to be taken: Enter the Supervisor's Office (SO) fire number, a number from 001 to 999 (must enter leading zeroes). The SO fire number should be the next available consecutive number. Supervisor's Office numbers should be consecutive, without gaps, unless there is a significant local need to do otherwise. Gaps in the numbering sequence often cause future questions over whether or not the fire record for a Forest is complete. This information, combined with the year of discovery, give each fire report a unique identity. Note: The fire number is not generated by the system, which greatly increases the likelihood of gaps in consecutive numbering. If a duplicate number is entered, a system error message appears. </attrdef>
