An area depicting designated National Forest System (NFS) land boundaries, excluding boundaries designated by proclamation.
This data is intended for read-only use. The PADUS_DESIGNATION feature class was developed by the Forest Service for submission to the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US). It is the official inventory of public parks and other protected open space. With more than 3 billion acres in 150,000 holdings, the spatial data in PAD-US represents public lands held in trust by thousands of national, State and regional/local governments, as well as non-profit conservation organizations. PAD-US is published by the U.S. Geological Survey Gap Analysis Program (GAP). GAP produces data and tools that help meet critical national challenges such as biodiversity, conservation, recreation, public health, climate change adaptation, and infrastructure investment. USFS PAD-US data is pulled weekly from USFS Lands data. This dataset is more current than the combined annual update of PAD-US from USGS GAP.

The Regional Land Status personnel are responsible for their local data stewardship and maintenance. The overall collection nationwide consists of 100% attribute accuracy based on currentness and completeness.
Quality control measures taken: this feature class is populated by an automated translation process from the source feature class that is edited and maintained by the data stewards. Only stewards with the proper role grants can edit the data. The application used for editing has built in controls to only allow valid geometry and domains to control attribute integrity.
This theme is current to date of publication.
Generally the source information used to record spatial locations are from: 1) on-screen digitizing with a georeferenced topographic or image background; or 2) GPS field collected positions.
This data was published using Feature Manipulation Engine Software. The spatial features were extracted from the transactional database, manipulated to meet the desired output format and published to the target feature class.

Source Unique ID is a unique identifier managed by the aggregator that differentiates each parcel or protected area (when parcel data are unavailable_within the state. GAP uses this field, rather than point in polygon associations with the first word in Primary Local Name, to join and transfer existing PAD-US attributes not maintained or included by some Stewards (for example, GAP Status Code, IUCN Category, Date of Establishment, Access) to updates.

CATEGORY
General category for the protection mechanism associated with the protected area. 'Fee' is the most common way real estate is owned. A conservation 'easement' creates a legally enforceable land preservation agreement between a landowner and government agency or qualified land protection organization (i.e. land trust). 'Other' types of protection include leases, agreements or those over marine waters. 'Designation' is applied to designations in the federal theme not tied to title documents (e.g. National Monument, Wild and Scenic River). These may be removed to reduce overlaps for area based analyses.

SOURCE_PAID
A unique identifier available in the aggregator's data that identifies and groups multiple parcels within a protected area together. Source_UID and Source_PAID are the same when parcel data are not available. The "Primary Designation Name" is the same for all parcels/records with the same "Source_PAID." Protected areas that cross state boundaries should be cut at the state boundary and have the same "Source_PAID" and same "Primary Designation Name" but different "State_Name" and "Source_UIDs." This will necessitate coordination with the adjacent state Steward or the PAD-US Coordinator. Fortunately, this should be a rare occurrence. GAP uses "Source_PAID" and "State Name," "OwnerName," and "GAP Status Code" to summarize PAD-US Viewer and to assign the WDPA Code that links PAD-US for the PAD-US Viewer and to assign the WDPA Code that links PAD-US to the North American and World Database for Protected Areas (see WDPA Site Code definition). This ID identifies distinct protected areas and ensures your data are locally, nationally, and globally interoperable.

A data aggregator submits data in the PAD-US schema according to standards and/or aggregates regional or national datasets with required fields for PAD-US translation.
