The RoadlessArea_2001_ID_CO feature class describes the boundaries of all Roadless Areas managed by the U.S. Forest Service. These roadless areas were designated by administrative rule making to provide management direction for their conservation and management. The RoadlessArea Conservation Rule of 2001 designated roadless areas nationwide. Subsequent rules, the Idaho Roadless Rule of 2008, and the Colorado Roadless Rule of 2012 replaced that direction and designation in the states of Idaho and Colorado. The Roadless Area_2001_ID_CO includes the current roadless area boundaries from all three rules and excludes roadless areas which have been superseded by a subsequent rule.
<purpose>The RoadlessArea_2001_ID_CO feature class describes the boundaries of all Roadless Areas managed by the U.S. Forest Service so that agency personnel and the United States public can understand where management direction for the conservation and management of all areas with-in Forest Service lands that are designated for roadless area management applies.</purpose>

<procdesc>Areas qualifying as “roadless” are delineated and attributed by forests and regions. 2001 Roadless areas are combined with the Idaho and Colorado area by selecting all records except Idaho and Colorado and then combining the selection with state-level datasets. Attribution and geometry are updated. The three datasets exist in order to incorporate more acreage and special cases within both Colorado and Idaho. Changes to the Colorado and Idaho Roadless Rule are subject to public review and comment, subject to 36 CFR 294 Subpart D for Colorado and 36 CFR 294 Subpart C for Idaho. More information can be found at http://www.fs.usda.gov/roadmain/roadless/coloradoroadlessrules and http://www.fs.usda.gov/roadmain/roadless/idahoroadlessrule</procdesc>

<procdesc>A technical correction to the name of an IRA on the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest was performed by the GTAC. This correction changes the name of the IRA from “Elkhorn Wilderness Study Area Plus Additions” to “Elkhorn”. The technical correction complies with direction described in the Roadless Area Conservation Rule 294.11 and Interim Directive 1920-2001-1 section 1925.05.</procdesc>

<procdesc>A correction based on initial mapping errors within multiple IRAs on the Bridger-Teton National Forest was approved by Chief Victoria Christiansen on June 25, 2021. The roadless decision memo “Technical Correction to the 2001 Inventoried Roadless Area Boundary” codifies the Chief’s approval and extent of the changes. These corrections comply with direction described with the Roadless Area Conservation Rule (36 C.F.R. Part 294, Subpart B (2001)). The authority for this decision is specified in the 2001 IRA Rule Preamble which states “In the event of a modification to correct any clerical, typographical, or other technical error is needed, the change will be made to the national headquarters maps and corrected copies of the maps made available to other administrative units”. The individual IRAs subject to correction include Gros Ventre Mountains IRA (Fisherman Creek and Game Creek area), Salt River Range and Grayback Ridge IRA (Lower Greys River area) and the Little Sheep Mountain IRA (Moose-Gypsum Creeks area). These corrections are supported by new mapping technology which displays how the identified areas were never intended for inclusion in IRAs. This technical error is most likely the result of maps being drawn at a scale where that error was not visible. The provided source date for these edits was vertically integrated to the FS boundary.</procdesc>
