The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) BIGMAP Tree Species Aboveground Forest Biomass represents estimates in
tons
per acre for total aboveground biomass as well as that of 327 individual tree species at a 30 meter pixel
spatial
resolution within the extent of the coterminous United States.
This slideshow displays a sampling of the FIA BIGMAP Tree Species Aboveground Biomass Layers
The modelling effort used to create these datasets draws upon all CONUS-wide Landsat 8 OLI scenes collected
from
2014-2018 and data from 212,978 FIA plots measured during the same period. The image processing workflow
uses
harmonic regression to characterize the vegetation phenology derived from the dense time series imagery.
This
phenological information, along with associated climatic and topographic data, are used with tree species
information collected on the plots in an ecological ordination model. The position of pixels and plots along
these
ecological gradients is used to associate each pixel with a set of most similar FIA plots. This approach to
making
predictions is known as “k-nearest neighbors.” Models were created for each of 36 ecological provinces that
span
CONUS, and then mosaicked together to encompass the entire range of each species.

BIGMAP_AGB_<species code>_<data year>_<species common name>_<creation timestamp>.tif
Each file associated with the Geotiff follows an identical naming format. The names begin with the abbreviation "AGB" for "Aboveground Biomass". Next is the 4 digit FIA species code, followed by the data representation year, then the species common name, and finally a timestamp representing the date and time the dataset was created

Validation Shapefile Naming Format:
The included shapefiles contain comparitive assessment validation data and follow a very similar naming format, replacing the file creation timestamp of the respective Geotiff with the word "Validation" and the validation level or scale.
