Forest Service FIA BIGMAP Tree Species Aboveground Biomass Layers

USDA Forest Service FSGeodata Clearinghouse - USFS FIA BIGMAP

The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) BIGMAP Tree Species Aboveground Forest Biomass represents estimates in tons per acre for total aboveground biomass as well as that of 327 individual tree species at a 30 meter pixel spatial resolution within the extent of the coterminous United States.

This slideshow displays a sampling of the FIA BIGMAP Tree Species Aboveground Biomass Layers

The modelling effort used to create these datasets draws upon all CONUS-wide Landsat 8 OLI scenes collected from 2014-2018 and data from 212,978 FIA plots measured during the same period. The image processing workflow uses harmonic regression to characterize the vegetation phenology derived from the dense time series imagery. This phenological information, along with associated climatic and topographic data, are used with tree species information collected on the plots in an ecological ordination model. The position of pixels and plots along these ecological gradients is used to associate each pixel with a set of most similar FIA plots. This approach to making predictions is known as “k-nearest neighbors.” Models were created for each of 36 ecological provinces that span CONUS, and then mosaicked together to encompass the entire range of each species.

DOWNLOAD FILE INFORMATION

  • File naming format:

    • BIGMAP_AGB_<species code>_<data year>_<species common name>_<creation timestamp>.tif
    • Each file associated with the Geotiff follows an identical naming format. The names begin with the abbreviation "AGB" for "Aboveground Biomass". Next is the 4 digit FIA species code, followed by the data representation year, then the species common name, and finally a timestamp representing the date and time the dataset was created

    • EXAMPLE: BIGMAP_AGB_0122_2018_PONDEROSA_PINE_08142023231656.tif

  • Geotiff associated file extensions:

    • .tif - Geotiff formatted raster dataset containing modeled pixel values
    • .tfw - Geotiff world file, used to geolocate the raster data (further documentation available here)
    • .tif.lyrx - Layer file containing an optional color ramp for cartographic representation of the dataset
    • .tif.ovr - Geotiff overview/pyramid file (further documentation available here)
    • .tif.xml - XML formatted metadata.
    • .tif.aux.xml - ESRI formatted statistics (further documentation available here)
    • .png - PNG formatted preview image of dataset.

  • Validation Shapefile Naming Format:

    • The included shapefiles contain comparitive assessment validation data and follow a very similar naming format, replacing the file creation timestamp of the respective Geotiff with the word "Validation" and the validation level or scale.

    • EXAMPLE: BIGMAP_AGB_0122_2018_PONDEROSA_PINE_VALIDATION_L1.shp

    • The different validation levels are as follows:
      • L1 - single EMAP hexagons (160,124 acres)
      • L2 - single EMAP hexagons (1,120,868 acres)
      • L3 - single EMAP hexagons (7,846,076 acres)

    • Each validation shapefile also includes a layer file (extension .lyrx) which contains symbology for visualizing the comparative assessment data

    • For further documentation regarding shapefile associated file formats, please refer to ESRI documentation.

  • To validate checksums:

    • Open a command line window and run the following command appropriate to your operating system.
    • The resulting value should match the value you get by clicking on the species checksum button on the table above.

    • Windows:
      • certutil -hashfile [file path] SHA256
      • example: certutil -hashfile C:\Users\username\Downloads\BIGMAP.zip SHA256

    • Mac OS:
      • shasum -a 256 [file path]
      • example: shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/BIGMAP.zip

    • Linux:
      • sha256sum [file path]
      • example: sha256sum ~/Downloads/BIGMAP.zip
